In Australia more than five million tonnes of edible food is wasted each year and half of this comes from homes. Australians throw away nearly $10 billion in food waste each year even though 15% of people in Australia go hungry (given Australia now has the highest median wealth per adult in the world, this stat surprised us too).
A few of our favorite ways to reduce waste are to shop with a list to make sure we only get what we need, keep our vegetables in a tray of water or wet produce bags in the fridge to keep them crisp, and whip up a soup or some pasta with any leftover veggies that are going a bit soft (we often freeze these to use for this). All our eligible scraps go into the compost or worm farms.
