Earlier this year Global Witness calculated that all production from new oil and gas fields – beyond those already in production or development – is incompatible with reaching the world’s climate goals. Yet… the oil and gas industry is set to spend $4.9 trillion (TRILLION) over the next ten years on exploration and extraction in new fields.
That’s an eye-watering amount of money to spend on fossil fuels we need to leave in the ground in their entirety.
This is one of the areas that we need to demand our governments to act on.
Demand it from your government by calling them, emailing, attending protests, and voting them out if they don’t act. Demand divestment from organizations you belong to or attend. Demand change by swapping your fossil-fuel funding bank or retirement fund. Encourage companies in major industries who prop up polluting clients to say no. Support companies doing the right things.
We need to keep this in the ground.
