The little island of Flores in Guatemala

My friend Kate and I headed to Flores on a whim with nothing but a few dollars in our pockets (as it turns out, not even that). We got by. Flores is chilled out, cheap and everyone only too happy to help. Pick a little guesthouse, kick off your shoes and soak your feet in the overflowing river each evening with delicious fresh food on standby.
