It’s a good time to think about mattresses though. We never used to much but now that start-ups have exploded around us, they’re much more accessible in price than they ever were and we’re getting rid of them faster than ever. Second hand mattresses have also long had a bit of a stigma attached to them. Are we still feeling that? _

Mattresses are among the most commonly dumped items (illegally). The UK threw away more than 7 million mattresses in 2017, the vast majority of which went straight to landfill. The US throws away 18.2m mattresses a year, but there are only 56 facilities available to recycle them. _

Remember when we used to buy a mattress that would stay with us for a decade? There are now at least 175 companies that will ship roll-down / box-up mattresses to our doors. One of the biggest players in this space is the US firm Casper. It was valued at $1.1 billion last year (and it comes with a pretty intriguing but horrible story about the online review business). _
